Life of leds and how to increase their lives

You have often read that the life of an LED lighting product is far superior to the more traditional systems. But what does it mean?

What is the life of the LEDs?

First of all, the duration of the LEDs is expressed in hours but the calculation must be contextualized in terms of years. We can say that the hours of operation are essentially the hours of darkness. The night hours, on average, are 12 daily and in one year the hours of darkness are in total 4380. Rounding up is possible to say that the operating hours are 4400 per year. If we think that LEDs, as we will see later, have a yield of 30,000 hours, it is possible to understand how much it is worth buying one of these devices.
When buying a lamp, or LED spotlights, it is questionable how long they last. To ensure that these last for a long time, it is necessary to carry out a good maintenance.

How to increase the life of the LEDs

In this sense, it may be useful to use a motion or twilight sensor capable of starting the lighting system when movement is detected or once the sun has set.
To ensure good LED life, it is advisable to ensure that they work at a temperature that is not too high: for a yield of over 30,000 hours, the LED must work at an average temperature of 66 °. The higher the operating temperature of the device, the shorter the life of the LED. Therefore, to guarantee the LEDs a long life, it is necessary to maintain the right ventilation.
In the case of LED strips, a good rule to increase the life cycle is to use aluminum led profiles. This is because not only is it protected against impacts or contact with external agents, but also because aluminum is the best heat dissipation material.
Be careful where you are going to place your LED product, whether indoors or outdoors if it is in a humid environment where there is a risk of contact with water. Always check the degree of IP protection of your lighting product, thus ensuring it a long life.
Even LED lamps are subject to faults related to component defects, weld imperfections, external causes, overvoltages and transients that produce overcurrent’s, caused by the interruption of electronic circuits. It is possible to act concretely against the latter by inserting passive filters on the supply network. These filters consist of a network of capacitors and inductors, the cost of which is very low, which require little time for assembly.
Often the frequent burns of LED spotlights, of which there is evidence on the various sales sites by consumers, are related to the type of power supply. Our current LED technology is equipped with a controlled feed injection, which gives it a useful life of over 22 years.
Attention also to the selling price. An LED bought for 30 euros, but characterized by poor technology, will tend to break down with greater speed and the cost per day will be 4.20 per day. If the LED spotlight for which you spent 300 euros has a quality LED technology, it will have a life expectancy of 22 years with a daily cost of 0.037. Therefore, as every time a purchase is to be made, it is necessary to assess the quality of the type of investment being made, in order to have satisfactory results.

Duration of LEDs at a glance

The LEDs have an exceptional duration, the life cycle of over 30,000 corresponding to about 22 years. Here's what to do to make your LEDs last longer:
1.     Use, where possible, products with motion and twilight sensors.
2.     Use the led profiles to preserve the durability of the strips.
3.     Maintain an operating temperature that is not too high.
4.     Check that the degree of IP protection of your product is suitable for your needs.
5.     Avoid overloading the electricity grid and use passive filters.
6.     Use the correct type of power supply.
7.     Buy quality products and beware of low-cost LED products.
